Ingredients:
- 1 medium apple, diced (150g)
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter (14g)
- 1 tbsp brown sugar (12g)
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon (1g)
- 1 tsp lemon juice (5ml)
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats (90g)
- 1 cup water (240ml)
- 1 cup milk of choice (240ml)
- ¼ tsp fine sea salt (1.5g)
Instructions:
- Place a saucepan over medium heat and melt the butter. Add the diced apples and sauté for 3–5 minutes.
- Stir in the brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Cook for another 2 minutes until the apples are softened and the edges are mahogany-colored.
- Pour the rolled oats directly into the pan with the apples and stir for 60 seconds to toast the oats in the cinnamon butter.
- Slowly pour in the water, milk, and salt. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, ensuring it does not reach a rolling boil.
- Reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 7–10 minutes until the liquid is absorbed and the oatmeal is creamy.
- Remove from heat and let the oatmeal sit for 2 minutes to allow the residual heat to thicken the texture.
