Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For Secret Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • 1 tsp pickle relish
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

Instructions

  • In a skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tbsp butter and cook onions until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Set aside.
  • Form ground beef into 4 patties. Season with salt and pepper. Cook in a skillet over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes per side until browned and cooked to desired doneness.
  • Mix all secret sauce ingredients in a small bowl.
  • Butter one side of each slice of bread. Layer Swiss cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, and cheddar cheese on the unbuttered side.
  • Spread secret sauce on the other bread slice and place on top.
  • Cook the sandwich in a skillet over medium heat until the bread is toasted and the cheese melts, about 2-3 minutes per side.

Notes

For an extra crispy texture, press down slightly on the sandwich while it cooks. Serve with pickles or fries for a diner-style meal.
