Grilled cheese patty melts are the perfect comfort food, combining juicy ground beef patties with melted cheese and golden, toasted bread. This recipe features seasoned beef, gooey cheddar or Swiss cheese, and crispy, buttery bread grilled to perfection. It’s a satisfying, easy-to-make meal that’s ideal for lunch or dinner and can be served with fries or a side salad.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 8 slices of bread (sourdough or rye works great)
  • 8 slices cheddar or Swiss cheese
  • 4 tbsp butter, softened
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil (for cooking)

Instructions

  • In a bowl, season the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Divide the beef into 4 patties.
  • Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the beef patties for about 4-5 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through. Set aside.
  • In the same skillet, cook the sliced onions until softened and caramelized, about 5 minutes.
  • Butter one side of each bread slice. Place a slice of bread, butter-side down, on a hot skillet.
  • Add a slice of cheese, a beef patty, some caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Top with another slice of bread, butter-side up.
  • Grill each sandwich for 2-3 minutes per side, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  • Serve hot with a side of fries or a salad.

Notes

  • Use Swiss cheese for a classic patty melt flavor or cheddar for a sharper taste.
  • You can add toppings like pickles, sautéed mushrooms, or even bacon for extra flavor.
  • Serve with ketchup, mustard, or a side of Thousand Island dressing for dipping.
