Perfect for lunch or dinner, this iconic diner favorite is packed with flavor and easy to make at home. Serve with a side of fries or a fresh salad for a complete meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese (or cheddar)
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes until caramelized. Set aside.
  • Form ground beef into 4 equal patties. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  • In the same skillet, cook patties over medium heat for about 4-5 minutes per side, until browned and cooked to your liking. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  • Spread butter on one side of each slice of rye bread. In the skillet, place 4 slices of bread, buttered side down.
  • Top each with a slice of cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Place the remaining bread slices on top, buttered side up.
  • Grill each sandwich for 3-4 minutes per side until the bread is golden and the cheese is melted.
  • Serve hot, with optional pickles or your favorite condiments.

Notes

  • You can use a mix of Swiss and cheddar for extra flavor.
  • For a crispier texture, press the sandwiches lightly with a spatula while grilling.
